Wellness in Italy: Thermal Spas, Recovery & Longevity
Thermal and mineral resorts, thalassotherapy, Medical Wellness & SPA.
Italy offers an exceptional variety of wellness destinations where natural therapeutic resources become part of the journey itself. Abano and Montegrotto Terme, the thermal resorts of Tuscany, Fiuggi and Bormio welcome guests throughout the year, combining wellness programmes with comfortable stays in every season. Ischia and seaside thalassotherapy are especially appealing during the warmer months, when thermal and marine treatments are naturally complemented by a mild climate, walks and time by the sea.

Thermal & Mineral Resorts in Italy
From hot geothermal springs and therapeutic mud to mineral waters used for drinking cures, each Italian resort is shaped by its own natural resource. Here, the wellness programme becomes part of the journey, while the hotel extends the experience of the destination itself.

Abano Terme & Montegrotto Terme
Abano Terme and Montegrotto Terme form one of Italy’s best-known thermal destinations. Wellness here is centred on hot geothermal water, matured thermal mud and a long tradition of balneotherapy, with treatment facilities integrated directly into the resort hotels.
Thermal Water & Therapeutic Mud
The resort’s principal natural resource is saline bromine-iodine thermal water. It travels underground through the rocks of the Alps and the Euganean Hills before emerging at temperatures of up to 75–87 °C. Once cooled, the water is used in thermal pools, baths, inhalation treatments and hydrokinesitherapy.
One of Abano’s defining features is the maturation process of its therapeutic mud. Natural clay is matured in flowing thermal water in special tanks, gradually absorbing minerals and developing into the thermal mud for which the resort is renowned.
In Abano and Montegrotto, the entire experience — from consultation and treatments to relaxation — can take place within the hotel itself, bringing together thermal pools, mud therapy, hydrotherapy, massage and SPA in one resort setting.

Montecatini Terme
Montecatini Terme is a historic Tuscan resort where drinking mineral waters remain the defining natural resource. The wellness experience blends naturally into the rhythm of the town, with visits to thermal pavilions, walks through the parks and relaxed stays at a hotel of choice.
Tuscany’s Drinking-Water Spa Resort
In Montecatini Terme, the drinking cure becomes part of a distinctive spa ritual: mineral waters are taken in the town’s historic thermal parks and specialised centres according to an individual programme.
This allows guests to choose their hotel according to preferred comfort and atmosphere, combining a wellness programme with walks, relaxation and the unhurried rhythm of a Tuscan resort. Thermal treatments are also available, but Montecatini’s defining feature remains its drinking mineral waters.

Fiuggi
Fiuggi is a historic mineral spa resort in Lazio, renowned for its drinking water and centuries-old hydrotherapy tradition. Today, two distinct formats coexist here: the classic spa drinking cure and contemporary high-level medical wellness.
Two Ways to Experience Fiuggi
Classic Fiuggi spa experience. The local water is cold and low in mineral content. The principal drinking areas are located in the thermal parks Bonifacio VIII and Anticolana, where the course is taken at the springs and tailored individually following consultation with a spa physician. Depending on the guest’s goals, the programme may be complemented by physiotherapy, inhalation treatments, walks and gentle physical activity.
Palazzo Fiuggi Wellness Medical Retreat. This contemporary medical retreat interprets Fiuggi’s heritage in a different way, focusing on personalised wellness, longevity and detox programmes, diagnostics, nutrition, recovery, movement and lifestyle. It is a destination medical-wellness concept in its own right, rather than simply a SPA hotel near the springs.

Thermal Tuscany

Ischia
Ischia is an island where thermal culture is woven into the landscape itself. Hot springs, thermal pools, therapeutic mud and SPA programmes come together with the sea, lush gardens and a Mediterranean climate. This makes the island equally suited to classic thermal stays, seaside wellness programmes and comprehensive SPA recovery.
Thalassotherapy
Seawater, saline pools, algae, marine minerals and a mild climate shape Italy’s distinctive approach to seaside wellness. The strongest thalasso experiences are concentrated in Sardinia and Tuscany, while Ischia adds its own thermal heritage to the marine setting.
Seawater & specialised thalasso centres
Sardinia & the Tuscan Coast
Here, thalassotherapy becomes a destination in itself: specialised centres use seawater, pools at different temperatures, marine minerals and dedicated SPA programmes.

Medical Wellness & SPA
Medical wellness in Italy combines diagnostics, personalised nutrition, longevity and detox programmes, stress recovery, physical activity, aesthetic medicine and lifestyle support. Depending on the resort concept, these programmes may be complemented by thermal treatments, seawater, SPA rituals and other natural resources, creating a comprehensive approach to recovery and preventive wellness.

Merano
Merano is represented primarily by two specialised retreat hotels whose programmes focus on medical expertise, lifestyle, nutrition and personalised recovery rather than on local thermal water as the principal therapeutic resource.
