Tomb of the Kings

Tailor-Made Tours And Excursions

Saint Denis Cathedral is older than Notre Dame Cathedral. In the crypt, in the underground part of the cathedral, are the tombs of the French kings.

Here there are sarcophagi decorated with sculptural images in which the bodies of the dead French kings rested. During the French Revolution, their remains were thrown into nearby ditches. However, after the revolution, the bones were collected and, since it was no longer possible to sort out whose bones were, they were placed in a single “mass” royal grave.

The Carolingians, Capetians, Valois and Bourbons are buried here. The burial grounds of the Cathedral of Saint Denis are one of the most sacred places in French history.
