The origins of Castel Monastero go back to the history of medieval Tuscany. First mentioned under the name Sarna in 1044, from 1050 the castle was called mainly Monastero, and also in connection with the nearby Berardenga Abbey. Besieged unsuccessfully by the Florentines in 1208, the castle was conquered in 1270 by Guido di Montfort, who used it as an outpost against the city of Siena. The village, which was later bought by the noble Sienese family Chigi Saracini, was turned into a country house.
